Dear Member,
I am very happy to announce to the Milton Heritage Society Membership
that Martin Axton has agreed to join our committee as the heritage
research coordinator. Martin was born in New Milton and lived all his
formative years in the New Milton Parish. His parents moved to Sea Road
Barton on Sea in 1952 where he attended St. Georges School in
Highcliffe, and then in 1957 to High Ridge Crescent in Ashley where he
attended Ashley Secondary School, where he was fortunate enough to be
taught History by the late great Arthur Lloyd. Martin was inspired by
Arthur Lloyd’s enthusiastic teaching, which made him decide to become a
History teacher later in his career.

We want the Milton Heritage Society to be more than just a group who
meet once a month for a talk and attend the occasional exhibition. The
MHS wants to inspire and motivate it’s members to carry out their own
research on local history or heritage matters. This can either be
carried out as an individual or in groups. The Milton Heritage Society
will offer guidance and support and will suggest methods of funding for
the research. In some cases, the MHS will be able to provide some data
and material to start the project off. It is hoped that members will
also contribute skills and knowledge to the various research groups. It
is intended that the material gathered by the groups will be written up
and published on the MHS website and in the form of books or pamphlets.

Some suggestions for future research topics are; The naming of our
streets, a record of buildings of heritage merit in Milton Parish,
Milton Parish in the two World Wars, the three bombings of New Milton,
the fossils of the Barton Levels, the poor law and welfare in Victorian
Milton, the railway station, literary connections to Milton Parish,
education in Milton Parish through the ages, Marconi wireless
experiments in Barton on Sea, the water tower, the Indian Army in Barton
on Sea 1914-1915. We welcome your suggestions for interesting research
topics.

On Saturday 16th of September the MHS will be supporting the New Milton
Town Council project called ‘Be Involved. This is a way of promoting the
wide ranging community activities in New Milton for all ages and
abilities. The MHS will have a table of local historic maps and images
on display in the War Memorial Centre from 10.00 until 16.00. Martin
Axton will be available for MHS members to meet and to discuss any
historical research projects that they want to start up. In addition the
MHS chairman, Nick Saunders, will be leading a heritage walk around New
Milton. The walk will last an hour during which Nick will give a brief
history of the area and show historic images of locations encountered en
route. There will be one walk at 11.30 and another at 14.30 both leaving
from the car park of the War Memorial Centre.

This opportunity are been brought to MHS members through our societies links with the New Forest National Parks community archaeology department.

On the 12th of September the New Forest community archaeology department are offering a free coach trip to the National Archives in Kew. The coach leaves the main car park in Lyndhurst at 07.45. It will return to the main car park by about 6.30 m. Access to the records held in the National Archives is free. There is a cafeteria at the site where lunch can be purchased. You need to book a place on the coach by clicking on the link below.

If you have not visited the National Archives before you will need to register for a readers ticket. These are free. The process takes about 30 minutes on your first arrival at Kew. I strongly advice you go to the National Archives website to review the criteria for obtaining a readers ticket, especially the pieces of ID you need to bring with you. The New Forest community archaeology department are hosting a New Forest Knowledge conference on 27th and 28th of October 2017. The venue will be the community centre in Lyndhurst. The tickets are £20 for a single day and £30 for both days. This includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day. This will be an excellent opportunity for Milton Heritage Society member to find out what other groups are doing and also to see what historical research methods are available to us. We may find out what assistance we can call on from other organisations to help us with our own local research. You need to book a ticket to be able to attend this event. Friday 29^th September 2017. A brief history of Milton Parish given by Nick Saunders, Chairman of the Milton Heritage Society. This talk will give an overview of the history of Old Milton, New Milton, Barton on Sea, Ashley and Bashley.  The talk will be illustrated with maps and images contrasting how our town looked in the past with how it has developed today.

At this meeting there will also be a short inaugural AGM and a forum where the committee will discuss with the membership the future plans of the MHS.

 Friday 13^th of October 2017. General Sir Henry Clinton, given by Stephen Petty, formerly head of history at Durlston Court School.  Sir Henry Clinton was an enigmatic army officer who lived at Ashley Clinton. He was a career soldier who fought alongside Wellington at the battle of Waterloo. He died at an early age and is commemorated in St Mary Magdalene Church in Old Milton.

Friday 24^th of November 2017. The talk will be given by Tony Davies Director, Smith Bradbeer & Co Ltd. He will tell the history of Bradbeers from 1837, including the New Milton department store & its future.

There will be no speaker in December.

26^th of January 2018 the talk will be on Eling Tide Mill given by Ruth Kerr the community outreach officer for the Mill.  Eling Tide Mill – past, present and future. The Eling Experience is closed for a major refurbishment project covering all aspects of the site. The jewel in their crown is Eling Tide Mill – one of the last two tide mills in the UK still able to mill flour regularly. This talk looks at the history of Eling Tide Mill and sheds light on what visitors can expect from the site when it re-opens in 2018.

On 23^rd of February the speaker will be David Hopkins the Hampshire County Archaeologist. He will be talking about the Historic Environment Record of Hampshire. He will give a fascinating potted account of Hampshire through time drawing on examples from the Milton area.

On 16^th of March 2017 the speaker is Eddie Curry the Director of New Milton Advertiser and Lymington Times. The talk will be entitled:

New Milton Advertiser and Lymington Times – Looking back and looking forward.

The talk will review the history of this family run business from 1928 until present day, as well as looking to the challenges and opportunities for a local paper in the 21^st century.   Technology used has changed massively but other aspects of the company still relies on the same journalistic skills.

One of the biggest challenges today is working out what should change and what should remain the same.  The paper continues to have a very loyal following but also needs to adapt and change to stay alive and well in a rapidly changing world.  There is a need to keep a balance between providing a service to the community as well as a sound business that maintains over 35 local jobs.

The talk will include some old and new photos and video clips and an insight into a very unique New Milton business.

On 10th of June 2017 The Milton Heritage Society was formally launched. Well over one hundred visitors came to see the new exhibition which told the historical story of Milton Parish.

Over fifty people signed up to join the MHS and are looking forward to a series of monthly lectures which are scheduled to start from September 2017.
